Portal Orb
The Reincarnated Demon King's Host Just Wants to Live in Peace, But the Hero Won't Leave Him AloneThe Portal Orb is a rare magical item whose defining function is to open a portal to a desired location. Its power is inseparable from its destruction: the orb must be broken to create the passage, making each use both a means of escape or arrival and the permanent loss of the device itself. During the trial of the Demon King’s Host, it provides the decisive link between the party’s location and the capital, where Theo is to be judged.
Definition and Operation
The Portal Orb is not ordinary travel equipment but a scarce single-use transport device. Its rarity comes from the specific condition attached to its magic: it can open a portal to a chosen destination only when it is broken. The object therefore functions through a stark exchange between material integrity and magical access. While intact, it remains a valuable reserve; once activated, it ceases to exist as an object and leaves behind the portal it has enabled.
Use in the Trial
Avery’s party had been equipped with the Portal Orb while Avery also possessed a magic scroll for sending messages to the court mage, who had the twin. After Theo put on the Magic-Dampening Handcuffs, the group used the Portal Orb to reach the capital. The transition was extraordinarily rapid: within ten minutes, the party was stepping through the portal into the capital courtyard.
The arrival transformed the situation’s scale and authority. A dozen knights and the court mage were waiting in the courtyard, indicating that the portal had delivered Theo directly into the hands of the court rather than merely bringing the party closer to the proceedings. The court mage immediately ordered Theo taken to the dungeons, so the Portal Orb’s successful operation led not to freedom but to formal custody.
Narrative Function and Consequences
The Portal Orb compresses distance at the exact moment when delay would otherwise be possible. Its use makes the legal response immediate and prevents the accused from remaining outside the capital while the court is alerted. Because the device reaches a desired location and is consumed in the process, it also carries a sense of irreversible commitment: once broken, the route has been opened, the destination reached, and the party’s course cannot be quietly undone.
Its role in the trial is consequently paradoxical. The Portal Orb is a tool of movement, yet its practical effect is confinement. It brings the party to the capital courtyard in minutes, but that arrival places Theo before the knights, the court mage, and the dungeons. The object’s destruction and the party’s arrival mark a sharp value shift from mobility to custody, turning magical convenience into the mechanism by which judgment becomes immediate and inescapable.
